Rejuvenation of Moore Park East

A major transformation is underway at Moore Park East (Sydney, NSW) which is set to become a high-quality, multi-use parkland in the heart of the city with more recreational space to picnic, play, relax or kick a ball.

Upgrade works will revitalise the site into a community green space with new tree-lined walkways, picnic areas, natural play spaces, high performance sports fields and new pathways to improve accessibility.

The first stage of landscape works are complete at Upper Kippax  to beautify the Village Green area for the community and visitors. Mature native trees have been planted in the north and north-eastern edges of the park.

The second stage of works includes upgrading Kippax Lake Field in partnership with the Sydney Roosters NRL Club. These works commenced in September 2023 and will include increased sports and spectator opportunities with upgrades to Kippax Lake Field.

In accordance with the Moore Park Master Plan 2040, high performance sport is a key part of Moore Park East for both community, and professional, sports groups including the Sydney Swans (AFL), the Sydney Roosters (NRL) and Australian Rugby Union (ARU).

The Kippax Lake Field, Moore Park East, is used by the Roosters as a training field. Under stage two of the works, there will be a total field upgrade and field extension to improve training facilities for high performance sport and community use. This will include resurfacing, irrigation, drainage and high-performance sports lighting powered by a new substation. A new, natural, spectator mound will offer an elevated view across the field for the community. Redevelopment of the sports field began in September 2023 and is expected to be finished in early 2024.

In Upper Kippax, a cricket wicket upgrade will improve the existing wicket bringing it in line with Cricket NSW design guidelines

The Moore Park East plan

The plan aims to enhance the identity of Moore Park while balancing the dual role the park plays as critical open space for the community and sporting groups, as well as a thoroughfare for major events at the adjacent Sydney Cricket Ground and Allianz Stadium.

Greater Sydney Parklands has worked closely with the community, stakeholders, local sporting groups and First Nations peoples to develop the Moore Park East Landscape Plan. The landscape plan builds upon engagement undertaken for the Moore Park Master Plan 2040, which identified the opportunity for the public land to be revitalised as shared green space.

Major features of the plan address feedback we received from the community during the consultation period. These include picnic areas, natural play spaces, tree-lined walkways, active play areas, community sports fields, and landscaping to green the park and support native wildlife.

The landscape plan will be delivered in line with the staged removal of temporary event on-grass car parking in the park. Parking provisions on Moore Park are legislated to be removed from Lower Kippax in December 2023, and from Showground Field in December 2025. Parking has already been removed from Upper Kippax and the area has been revitalised for community benefit and use.

Greater Sydney Parklands is currently developing a detailed design in the Village Green area in the northern corner of the park. Preparatory horticultural works have already commenced in the park, with further works expected to begin later in 2023.
