Westhaven Promenade brings back history

Watch Video

LandLAB’s Westhaven Promenade winds it way along the water’s edge from Wynyard Quarter through to Auckland’s Harbour Bridge. The insertion of the walkway re-introduces the public activities historically associated with this section of Auckland’s inner harbour prior to the construction of the marina.

The project provides a continuous “shared path” along the Westhaven foreshore, providing plenty of spots to picnic, sunbathe or just to relax watching whatever action’s happening on the busy harbour.

LandLAB have also worked with Waterfront Auckland’s marina team to develop designs for new marina infrastructure including pier entrances, signage and the re-use of pontoons and platforms for public access.

The decking structure design accommodates anticipated king tide events, sea level rise and storms surges for the next 30 to 50 years.

Several cultural design elements are integrated to reflect the relationship of the promenade to significant sites and harbour landmarks at key points. Maori whakatauki (proverbs) and waka stories are integrated within the precast concrete terrace steps and land-sea fauna expressed at St Mary’s Bay.
